Today, Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28) secured $110,000,000 for VIA’s Advanced Rapid Transit North/South Corridor Project in the FY25 House Transportation appropriations bill.

The federal dollars will help create a 10.35-mile bus rapid transit (BRT) line from the San Antonio International Airport through downtown San Antonio to Steves Avenue in the Southside. The Project will help connect several key destinations, including San Antonio International Airport, North Star Mall, Park North Shopping Center, San Pedro Springs Park, San Antonio College, VIA Metro Center, Baptist Medical Center, Downtown San Antonio, Roosevelt Park, and Missions National Historic Park.

The Project will help connect workers to jobs, students to educational opportunities, and offer independent travel options for the elderly and people with disabilities.

“Quality transportation infrastructure is key to growth and a high quality of life in our community. I secured these federal dollars to ensure my constituents in the Southside have reliable transportation to and from San Antonio’s key destinations, including San Antonio International Airport and VIA Metro Center. Ultimately, VIA’s North/South Corridor Project will help keep San Antonio connected,” said Dr. Cuellar, a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee. “In Congress, I will continue to fight for federal dollars that invest in South Texas transportation infrastructure. Thank you to the San Antonio Congressional delegation and VIA for working with me to secure this historic win.”

The City of San Antonio has recently experienced unprecedented growth. In 2020, San Antonio grew to over 2 million residents, and in 2040, the city is expected to grow by an additional 1 million or more.  With this growth in population, new vehicles will take to the streets and increase travel time by approximately 82%. VIA’s Advanced Rapid Transit North/South Corridor Project will help combat this by providing quality public transportation for Northside and Southside residents, thereby reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality.
