Rep. Cuellar Announces $270 Million in Federal Funding for VIA Green Line Project and $1,672,978 for Brooks Development Authority in San Antonio

San Antonio, TX | Fernanda Nunez Cazares, District Press Assistant (619-209-1834), October 28, 2024

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Today, Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28), Ph.D. announced $270 Million in federal funding for VIA Metropolitan Transit’s Advanced Rapid Transit Green Line project and $1,672,978 in federal funding for the Brooks Development Authority in San Antonio.

"I secured $270 million in federal funding for the VIA Metropolitan Transit’s Advanced Rapid Transit Green Line project as well as nearly $1.7 million in federal funds for the Brooks Development Authority,” said Dr. Cuellar, a Senior Member of the House Appropriations Committee. "Both of these projects will improve the lives of San Antonio residents by providing them with the infrastructure they need to get around the city. Special thanks to VIA leadership, the Brooks Development Board, Brooks Board Member Dan Rossiter, Texas State Rep. Liz Campos, Texas State Rep. Josey Garcia, and City Councilwoman Phyllis Viagran for their leadership and help in making these projects happen.”

The Green Line will be designed to connect residents, specifically those from underserved communities to more opportunities for education, employment, goods, and resources. This is a new type of mass transit in San Antonio that will run in dedicated lanes, outside of regular traffic, and includes elements designed to reduce trip time. This includes off-board fare collection, level platform boarding and transit-priority traffic signals that will keep the Green Line running even during periods of peak traffic and congestion.

Out of the $270 million in federal funds provided to VIA, $158 million was allocated on the FY23 Appropriations Bill through the FTA. The other $110 million has already been secured in the House of Representatives and is awaiting the passage of the 2025 budget.

Also secured by Congressman Cuellar, the nearly $1.7 million in federal funds for Brooks Development Authority comes from the USDOT Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program. This funding will be used to install 24 publicly accessible EV charging stations at three sites across Brooks City Base.

This project will strategically provide Southeast San Antonio residents with access to EV charging stations in the places they live and work.

Congressman Cuellar will continue to fight for critical infrastructure funding that helps our communities grow and improve their overall quality of life.
