Rio Grande City, Texas—U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announced a new driver’s license program at South Texas College that will help meet the demand for professional truck drivers in the Rio Grande Valley. The South Texas College Commercial Truck License institute will partner with Trancasa, an international leader on ground transportation, to provide anti-collision technology to facilitate training, 24/7 security, and maintenance support. “The growing need for trucking drivers threatens our ability to keep up with trade demands,” said Congressman Cuellar. “This commercial driver’s license program will help us keep trucks on the road and ensure that trade remains strong in the Rio Grande Valley. I thank South Texas College President, Dr. Ricardo Solis, for his vision to create this program that will help meet local labor demands through quality education and training.” “We know there is an urgent need for truck drivers, and we are planning a very robust program where students will be able to obtain their CDL driver’s license and get them on the road as soon as possible. We are hoping to expand it to our campus in Weslaco and then Starr County,” said South Texas College President Dr. Ricardo Solis. “I refer back on my background in international trade and commerce to be able to bring all of my experience in those fields together to work here for the Valley, and to make STC a true center for workforce and economic development.” “Now, in partnership with STC, we are moving the world with a school devoted to the biggest and most in-demand transportation career - that of the CDL professional driver,” said Carlos Canales, CEO for Trancasa. Students will receive 200 hours of in-class and hands-on training with experienced instructors, along with the latest technology. Classes begun in January, 2022.
