Hillary Clinton supporters: We won’t underestimate Trump like GOP did

After former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s performance on Super Tuesday left her well-positioned to win the Democratic presidential nomination, her supporters are insisting Wednesday they aren’t going to underestimate GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump the way, they say, that Republicans did.

“I used to think that Donald Trump would be the easiest candidate to beat. … You have a lot of good moderates like Rubio, and you had Bush and other folks, Kasich,” Rep. Henry Cuellar, Texas Democrat, said on Fox Business Networks’s “Cavuto: Coast to Coast.”

“But we’ve seen that the Republicans have underestimated Donald Trump, and I’ll be one of those first Democrats to say don’t underestimate Donald Trump,” said Mr. Cuellar, who is supporting Mrs. Clinton in the Democratic presidential primary.

“We’re seeing what he’s doing to the Republican primary, and I think for any Democrat to think that he’s going to be the easiest target, he does have a little Teflon skin on him,” Mr. Cuellar said.

In a post-Super Tuesday memo, the pro-Clinton super PAC Priorities USA Action made a similar declaration.

“While Priorities USA will do all we can to make sure Hillary Clinton secures the Democratic nomination by encouraging strong turnout in primaries and caucuses across the country, we will continue to ramp up our preparations for the general election,” wrote Guy Cecil, Priorities USA’s co-chairman and chief strategist. “As part of that commitment, we will distinguish ourselves from Republican Super PACs by making smart, targeted investments, and taking the threat of a Trump presidency seriously.”

“The political malpractice committed by the Republicans when it comes to Donald Trump was avoidable and Priorities will not make the same mistake,” Mr. Cecil wrote. “You can’t ignore Donald Trump, you can’t hope someone else will take care of him, and you can’t beat him by becoming him (sorry Marco).”
