Railroads continues to cause problems for Laredoans

LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) -- Trains going back and forth, between Laredo and Mexico, cause traffic delays in our city.

It's a problem that has been going on for years.

If you've lived in Laredo for a while, you've probably been held-up by a crossing train.

That's a big problem for one West Laredo neighborhood where train delays are almost a daily way of life.

People who live there hope that problem will be gone soon.

Alvaro Castilla lives on the west side of Laredo

After living here for 8 years he says the mornings are bad.

Even worse he lives right in between two tracks.

Keeping him either trapped in or blocked out.

It's problems like that, that representative Henry Cuellar wants the government accountability office to look into.

We spoke with the congressman, from Washington, via Skype.

A couple years ago Castilla's daughter had a medical emergency and the ambulance couldn't get to his house.

Castilla says any improvement, even the slightest, will help him... And thousands of other Laredoans.

The accountability office will look at three things: the impact of changing times at train yards, pre-clearance for train operators in Mexico, and possibly moving the train yard.

All of this depends on the passage of Congressman Cuellar's bill.

If it passes, the government accountability office will have to report back to congress within 180 days.

The bill now heads to the house floor for full consideration.
