Rep. Cuellar Announces $4,273,601 for Affordable Housing and Community Development in Laredo

Today, U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28) announced $4,273,601 in federal funding for the City of Laredo to expand affordable housing and community development opportunities to spur economic growth. The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

“Today, I am pleased to announce over $4 million in federal grant funding for the City of Laredo,” said Dr. Cuellar, a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee. “This funding will allow the city to increase access to affordable housing units that will help support homeowners and renters alike. This funding will also allow the city to invest in additional community development projects, spurring economic growth and improving the quality of life for all South Texans.” 

Funding comes from the following grant programs: 

  • Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) Program – Provides annual formula grants to local governments to develop stronger, more resilient communities by expanding affordable housing options and economic development opportunities, primarily for low- and moderate-income people.
  • HOME Investment Partnership Program – Aims to produce affordable rental and owner-occupied housing for low-income families. 
  • Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) – Provides funds for homeless shelters, assists in the operation of local shelters, and provides funds related to social service and homeless prevention programs.
