Laredo, TX—U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announced that Serving Children and Adults in Need (SCAN) will receive a total of $1,940,000 over the next four years for the Frontera HIV and Mental Health Expansion Project from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

The funding will support the treatment of nearly 400 Webb County residents (100 residents per year) at high risk for HIV/Hepatitis infection who meet the criteria for a mental health disorder or co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders or co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders (CODs). In addition, a total of 800 high-risk individuals and their partners will be tested for HIV and hepatitis and linked to appropriate medical care.

“HIV and mental illness continue to have a devastating impact on populations across the United States, including in South Texas,” said Congressman Cuellar, a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee. “This federal investment will be used to support and treat individuals living with HIV and mental health illnesses to help improve their quality of life. As a member of the Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fund programs that provide services to support people living with HIV and mental health illnesses while encouraging their engagement in treatment and care. Congressman Cuellar has secured over $45 million in federal funding since 2005 for SCAN to provide medical treatment to the Webb County and wider South Texas community.
