Washington, DC—Today, U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) released the following statement after the federal government announced a plan to provide historic and targeted student debt relief:

“When my parents came to the United States, they instilled the value of education into me and my siblings. I understand and appreciate the importance of an education and always advocate for students in my district, and across the country, to continue with their educational pursuits. However, the cost of an education has continued to rise while families struggle to make ends meet, put gas in their car, and put food on the table,” said Congressman Cuellar, a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee. “Today’s announcement ensures that no American—our teachers, law enforcement officers, nonprofit professionals, single parents, and lower income folks—has to make that choice. It acknowledges that an education is as vital as our most basic necessities. And it puts hardworking South Texans first—making sure that anyone making less than $125,000 finds federal debt relief.”

The Congressman continued, “However, we must also acknowledge the millions of borrowers who have diligently paid off their student loans. I paid off my student loans as well. Let me be clear: I am disappointed that this change may add to the national deficit, but student borrowers will still have to make monthly payments according to their income levels. As your Congressman, I will always put the needs of South Texans first so that our families, our neighbors, and our children have enough resources to live a prosperous life.”

More specifically, the federal government has canceled up to $10,000 in federal student loan debt for borrowers earning less than $125,000 or households earning less than $250,000; up to $20,000 for Pell grant recipients; and extended the student loan payment pause.
