LAREDO, Texas (KGNS)

The discussion was meant to find possible solutions to some local buildings that are no longer in use.

Several federal agencies toured the old Mercy Hospital and the downtown HEB building to give the city suggestions on how to address the old buildings.

After touring the buildings, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, EPA and the U.S. Economic Development met with city officials to talk about their assessment in a roundtable discussion.

The City of Laredo requested help from Congressman Cuellar to bring in federal agencies to Laredo to help revitalize key parts of the city.

Cuellar says the next step could be for city officials to travel to San Antonio to learn what could be done to improve the area.

The next step will be for the federal agencies to outline a possible assistance program for the city.

Another important issue at the meeting was how to bring down the number of homeless veterans on the streets to zero.
