The 2017 federal budget passed by Congress includes a $10 million reimbursement for the local governmental agencies that funded the San Antonio River’s Mission Reach restoration project. The San Antonio River Authority and Bexar County officials praised San Antonio’s congressional delegation for securing the reimbursement, though they say the the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers still owes them more than $45 million. In 2010, the county funded $61.3 million of the corps’ share of the joint Mission Reach project, which restored the river’s wildlife habitat and added pedestrian and bike trails and boat chutes on the South Side. The corps has already paid back $6.2 million. “This project has transformed the San Antonio River into a unique family-friendly outdoor recreation area for all San Antonians and visitors to enjoy,” said U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-San Antonio, who serves on the House Appropriations Committee. Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff said the county and SARA can now use the funds to “enhance our waterways through projects like San Pedro Creek and others.” |
