KFOX14: The effort to change Cuban immigration policy

The effort to change Cuban immigration policy

EL PASO, Texas. A viewer named Kyle complained about U.S. immigration policy. He asked me why it's so easy for Cuban immigrants to get residency in this country compared to other Latin American immigrants.

As I explained last Thursday, it's because of a federal law created a half-century ago during the Cold War. It gives Cuban immigrants special status when they arrive in the U.S. because they came from a Communist country.

Right now, thousands of Cuban immigrants are coming into the U.S., many through El Paso. Analysts suspect the main reason for this new influx, is a belief among Cuban refugees that American immigration policy toward Cuba will change now that the two countries have restored diplomatic relations.

In fact, Texas Congressman Henry Cuellar is co-sponsoring a bipartisan bill that would end the policy that gives all Cubans who enter the U.S. immediate eligibility for refugee assistance. The change would essentially treat Cuban immigrants like all the others who come from Latin America.

I'll let you know Thursday why another Texas leader is doing all he can to make sure that doesn't happen.
