Texas Congressmen: Cuban Immigrants Should Not Get Special Treatment

U.S. reps. Henry Cuellar, (D-Laredo), and Blake Farenthold, (R-Corpus Christi), have introduced the Correcting Unfair Benefits for Aliens (CUBA) Act, which would strip Cuban immigrants of their special status.

President Barack Obama’s trip to Cuba last week generated plenty of discussion about the relationship between the U.S. and the communist nation.

Now, two congressmen from Texas have filed a bill seeking to change it.

U.S.reps. Henry Cuellar, (D-Laredo), andBlake Farenthold, (R-Corpus Christi), have introduced the CUBA Act — which stands for Correcting Unfair Benefits for Aliens.

It would strip the special immigration status that Cubans receive when they arrive in the U.S., like a green card and a clear path to citizenship. Almost every other immigrant must go to court and argue for such benefits.

Congressman Cuellar spoke with reporter Shelly Kofler about the reasons he believes change is needed. You can listen to the conversation above.
