LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) - With congress on recess this week, Congressman Henry Cuellar plans to take a trip across the border into Mexico.

Cuellar says if the U.S. and Mexico can work out infrastructure issues at the border, trade relations will improve significantly.

The four bridges connecting Mexico and Laredo are used by thousands of tractor-trailers each day, but Congressman Cuellar says congestion at these bridges needs to be corrected.

Cuellar says the number of trailers that cross the Laredo border in one year could circle the world twice if lined up end to end.

The Congressman doesn't think border security will be sacrificed with the changes - it will only increase fluidity in crossing the four international bridges.

Cuellar says with the amount of trade conducted between the two nations, both economies will benefit if these issues are fixed.

"Everyday there's one-point-three billion dollars of trade between the US and Mexico, but there's a bottleneck at the bridges. And we just gotta find a way so we can have better infrastructure, better coordination between the US and Mexico", said Cuellar.

Cuellar will arrive in Mexico Tuesday morning and head back to Laredo after a conference on Wednesday.
