WOAI: Local Lawmakers Call for a Texas Prison Cell for El Chapo

The manhunt is on for escaped drug kingpin Joaquin "el Chapo" Guzman, and when he's caught again, there's a growing push to send him to the United States where he'll stand trial. "Without a doubt, once he's caught, the U.S. is going to push even harder to get him extradited," Congressman Henry Cuellar tells Newsradio 1200 WOAI. The member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security says the United States provided Mexico with the means to catch the head of the Sinaloa cartel before, so we should have a say in the matter when it comes to prosecution, "We provided a lot of intelligence in getting some of the many kingpins that Mexico has caught," he says. Guzman was last seen Saturday in the shower area of his cell, according to a statement from the National Security Commission. It's believed that he walked through an elaborate, one mile tunnel, built allegedly without the detection of authorities. Congressman Cuellar finds it dubious that nobody saw this coming. "When you have someone who has been able to bribe prison officials, I hope that the U-s strongly insists that he be extradited." San Antonio State Senator Carlos Uresti agrees. He says when El Chapo is re arrested…he should be held in a Texas prison. |
