SAN ANTONIO BUSINESS JOURNAL: Congressman Hurd: Energy production is a matter of national security
Washington,

Congressman Will Hurd (R-Helotes) told a group of South Texas businessmen the success of the oil and natural gas industry in the United States is a matter of national security. Hurd made his remarks before a crowd of 200 people attending the Eagle Ford Consortium Conference in San Antonio on Thursday morning. "American energy security isn't just about securing resources, this is an issue of national security as well," Hurd said. A recent report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said the United States will be completely energy independent within the next 5 to 10 years thanks to renewables and shale oil and natural gas revolution. With that surplus in mind, Hurd said his office is working with other congressmen to lift the federal ban on exporting crude oil and to promote the construction of liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminals. "I want us to be selling energy to Western Europe," Hurd said. "I want us to be selling energy to Japan and South Korea because if we're doing it, the Russians aren't, the Iranians aren't and the Saudis aren't." Hurd said his office is working with Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo) to create an oil swap deal with Mexico where producers from the Eagle Ford shale will send 100,000 barrels a day of light sweet crude south of the border in exchange for heavy crude that can be used in American refineries. "This is good for us," Hurd said. "Let's keep those jobs here in the United States and keep the economy growing."
