KGNS: DHS Shutdown Deadline Approaches

Congress has until Friday to avoid a shutdown for the Department of Homeland Security.

Funding for the Department of Homeland Security is at risk if congress cannot agree on the terms for passing the measure funding. One of the issues dividing the parties is the immigration injunction that stopped the president's executive action from taking place. Congressman Henry Cuellar says there are several options. "One of the things that we can do is what we call a clean funding where we take out anything new, and keep it like last year. That's a compromise. I don't like that, but it's better than a shutdown."

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson says the possible shutdown of the department would threaten the administration's efforts to counter the extremist appeal of the Islamic state group in the United States. Congress goes back into session Tuesday.
