NEWS 92 FM: Congressional Inaction Forces Border Patrol to Draw Funds Elsewhere
Washington,
August 14, 2014
Homeland Security has to take money out of other agencies to make sure Border Patrol doesn’t run out of money. Texas Democratic Congressman Henry Cuellar said Congress adjourned without appropriating emergency funding for the Department of Homeland Security. “We were supposed to put the money for the Homeland Security folks and for the other agencies, ICE for example and right now Homeland has to take money out of FEMA, has to ship money away from Coast Guard to make sure that Border Patrol doesn’t run out of money,” Cuellar said. Cuellar said if Immigration and Customs Enforcement ran out of funds, it would be forced to release people it has in custody. He said Congress must redouble its efforts to address the humanitarian crisis on the border. Lawmakers don’t return to work until the second week of September. |
