WASHINGTON, D.C. (Office of Henry Cuellar) – Congressman Henry Cuellar commended this week’s meeting of Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina at the Mexican southern border to discuss the Central American immigration crisis.

Following the meeting, President Pena Nieto launched the Southern Border Program, a five point plan to secure Mexico’s southern border with Guatemala.

“I am encouraged by the meeting of President Pena Nieto and President Perez Molina and hope to see a continued dialogue between the United States, Mexico, and Central American countries,” said Congressman Cuellar. “The crisis we are witnessing at the Texas-Mexico border calls for a regional response that involves our neighbors to the south. It is vital for us to work with Mexico to secure their southern border to stem the flow of illegal immigration that is reaching our southern border. I have been in communication with the Ambassadors and Embassies of Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala to discuss how we can change and strengthen our immigration policies. The Appropriations Committee, of which I am a member, has already taken steps to support Mexico and Central America in their efforts to combat smuggling organizations and I remain ready to work with my Chairman and Ranking Member on this issue.”

President Pena Nieto’s five point plan includes:

1. A commitment to the proper operation of Mexico’s 10 official crossings with Guatemala and 2 with Belize to ensure orderly flow of people and goods across the border.

2. Improvement of infrastructure and equipment at the border to ensure the safety of immigrants and Mexicans.

3. Improving conditions for immigrants by expanding medical units on the border and strengthening cooperation with non-profit and civil society organizations.

4. Working towards regional co-responsibility with the United States, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras and economic development of shared border regions.

5. Establishing Mexican intergovernmental coordination to provide care and assistance to immigrants.
