Valley Central: Congressman wants Border Patrol to end “media blackout”

Action 4 News has diligently and consistently made calls to the U.S. Border Patrol officials asking to be allowed inside the Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol stations.

While Action 4 has been allowed inside the Brownsville Border Patrol station for a brief walk through, we have yet to get access inside the McAllen station.

The federal agency has been selective with the images they've provided to the media.

“They will tell you there is security reasons because of procedures, show cameras how they are processed so they are worried about security reasons but again my personal opinion, the American public should get at least a snap shot of what's happening," said Congressman Henry Cuellar.

Congressman Cuellar wants media to be let inside the facilities.

He released some images from inside.

His requests for transparency and media accent have also been denied.

"One of the reasons I released some of the photographs is because I thought it was important that people see what was happening down here in the border so we certainly want to see more transparency."

Action 4 News learned that Border Patrol agents are also being told to keep quiet about what they see every day, on the job.

We obtained this message which was allegedly sent to Border Patrol agents in the Rio Grande Valley.

It reads:
"Employees shall not speak to the media without proper authority, whether on duty or off duty.."

Now sources told Action 4 News that some agents want to come forward and speak about what they are experiencing during this crisis, but they fear they will lose their jobs.
