CONGRESSMAN HENRY CUELLAR ANNOUNCES NEW HEALTHCARE SERVICES FOR VETERANS LIVING IN SOUTH TEXAS COUNTIES

Today, Rep. Henry Cuellar announced that the veterans of Jim Hogg, LaSalle, Webb and Zapata counties will have increased local access to quality healthcare services.  As a result of Cuellar’s collaboration with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA), local veterans’ organizations and his colleagues in Washington, D.C., the VA will be offering new healthcare options to the veterans of South Texas.

“As I met with veterans from my district, I was hearing two things: that they needed better access to healthcare and that they needed services closer to home.  The men and women who serve our country deserve the very best healthcare that we can give them.  I commend the VA for taking the steps to provide our veterans with quality local healthcare,” said Cuellar.

Currently, limited services are offered and many veterans have to travel to San Antonio for regular appointments as well as specialized services.  With the new and enhanced services offered locally by the VA starting this month, the veterans in these four counties will be able to receive, among other services: physical and occupational therapy, prosthetics/orthotics, CAT scans, MRIs, dental and audioloygy services, and palliative radiation oncology.

Beginning in December 2008, the following services will be offered locally: pulmonary, urology and cardiology. In addition, dermatology, opthamology, endocrinology, and PTSD services will also be offered.

“As a Congressman, improving the lives of our veterans is a responsibility I take very seriously, and I am proud that we were able to facilitate these much-needed improvements to local healthcare options,” said Cuellar.

This partnership between local health providers and the VA is the first of its kind in the nation.  If the program proves to be a success, the VA could choose to implement it across the nation. Please view our Veterans' Services chart.
