Today, U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28) helped dedicate the new McMullen County Veterans Memorial. “I am honored to help dedicate this memorial to our veterans. This monument stands as a testament to the veteran community of McMullen. I would like to thank the 39 veterans in McMullen County for their service to our country – as a nation we are eternally indebted to those who wear the uniform,” said Dr. Cuellar. Dr. Cuellar continued “I also want to thank McMullen County, County Judge James Teal, Project Manager Dale Patterson, Assistant Project Manager Jared Longan, the Commissioners Court, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and all the contractors for their work in bringing the park and the memorial to life. In Congress, I will continue to fight to ensure that our veterans receive the recognition they deserve.” Funding for the memorial was provided by McMullen County. In addition to the $4.8 million McMullen County has invested to develop the park, there were $500,000 in federal dollars from the National Park Service’s Land and Water Conservation fund and $200,000 in support from Texas Parks and Wildlife for a project total of $5.5 million for the McMullen County Park. The park and the memorial will be places where people can gather for events and honor our veterans for years to come. Dr. Cuellar has fought to deliver for veterans. As a senior member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies, Dr. Cuellar helped secure $134.8 billion in discretionary funding for the Department of the VA in Fiscal Year 2024. These resources will expand veterans' access to services and boost department oversight and accountability.
