Cuellar Leads Bipartisan Letter to Secretary of State on Iran Nuclear Program

Washington | Dana Youngentob, DC Press Secretary (202-340-9148), December 17, 2021

Washington, DC— U.S. Congressmen Henry Cuellar (TX-28) and Jodey C. Arrington (TX-19) and along with 19 bipartisan members of Congress, sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken sounding the alarm on Iran’s nuclear advancements. The letter urges the State Department to hold Iran accountable for their non-cooperation with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors and their failure to comply with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty obligations.

“Iran must comply with international nuclear obligations and regulations—there are no exceptions,” said Rep. Cuellar. “We cannot let an aggressive actor threaten Israel—our strongest ally in the Middle East. Any state that fails to comply with these regulations should immediately be subject to sanctions and the administration must hold Iran accountable. I urge the administration to push for more nuclear oversight at the next IAEA meeting.”

“Iran is a state sponsor of terrorism and the biggest threat to our ally Israel. They must never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon," said Rep. Arrington. “As talks between the U.S. and Iran continue, this administration cannot settle for a weak and ineffectual deal that promises sanctions relief, but does nothing to address Iran’s ability to develop nuclear weapons and their support for terrorist groups. The U.S. must also continue to lead on this issue at the next IAEA Board of Governors meeting and hold Iran accountable for their refusal to answer questions regarding undisclosed nuclear activity.”
