Rep. Cuellar Secures $171,600 in Federal Funding to Support De-Escalation Training Efforts

Washington | Dana Youngentob, DC Press Secretary (202-340-9148), December 2, 2021

San Antonio, TX—U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) secured $171,600 in federal funding for the city of San Antonio to support de-escalation training efforts. The funding comes as part of the administration’s efforts to advance the practice of community policing in law enforcement.

“Community policing is all about relationships and interactions with the community. Increasing trust between our law enforcement and the people they serve will allow us to be more effective in keeping our communities safe. De-escalation training equips our officers with skills that prevent the escalation of conflicts and violence, making police interactions less confrontational,” said Congressman Cuellar. “I will continue to utilize my position on the House Appropriations Committee to secure funding for our local law enforcement agencies that provides them with resources, both tangible and non-tangible, to perform their jobs in an effective, and safe, manner.”

“The San Antonio Police Department appreciates Congressman Cuellar’s continued support and advocacy as the Department pursues public safety funding opportunities with the Department of Justice,” said San Antonio Police Chief William McManus.

The grant was awarded through the United States Department of Justice’s 2021 Community Policing Development Program.
