BROOKS: BROOKS BREAKS GROUND ON CONNECTION TO SAN ANTONIO RIVER

Brooks will soon connect directly to the San Antonio River Mission Reach. Construction is currently underway on an extension of The Greenline linear park to more than 15 miles of walking, jogging and biking trails stretching from the historic missions through downtown and The Pearl and up to Brackenridge Park.

“We continue to invest in projects that create increased quality of life benefits for our community,” said Bexar County Judge Nelson W. Wolff. “In addition to increasing the accessibility of fitness and respite opportunities for Southside residents, The Greenline extension will connect Brooks and its community to San Antonio’s cultural roots – the San Antonio River and the historic missions World Heritage site.”

Located at the southern end of The Greenline, the extension will be approximately 1,200-feet long, connecting to existing walking trails along the San Antonio River at Mission Reach. The extension will feature a 10-foot wide mixed-use pathway, a 43-foot long tunnel underneath the Union Pacific Railroad line, landscaping, drainage structures, and shaded congregation areas.

“Our mission is to address the needs of our surrounding community – from employment, to housing, to connectivity,” said Brooks President and CEO Leo Gomez. “The Greenline extension will provide tens of thousands of Southside community members with a direct connection to downtown and beyond.”

The $1.4 million project broke ground in late July and has an estimated completion date of fall 2021. The project is being managed by the San Antonio River Authority with RCO Construction serving as the general contractor.

Nestled in the heart of the Brooks campus, The Greenline is a 43-acre linear park with 1.5 miles of illuminated hike, bike and jogging trails, fitness and play structures, shaded pavilions, restrooms and a variety of public art installations. Opened in April 2018, The Greenline is open to the public and hosts a variety of family-friendly events and activities annually.
