Laredo, TX – Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announced $9,450,000 in federal funding to the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).  These funds, awarded though the US Department of Labor (DOL) Building State Capacity to Expand Apprenticeship through Innovation program, will support the statewide expansion of the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) - in order to meet local apprenticeship needs while enhancing employer engagement and performance.

“Apprenticeships are significant opportunities in today’s workforce,” said Congressman Cuellar. “Not only do they allow for young people to gain real-world experience, but it also allows for employers to mentor and develop their apprentices with the right skills that further the company’s or organization’s objectives and goals. This federal investment will ensure that the Texas Workforce Commission continues to deliver quality on-the-job training for our up-and-coming workers.”

“As a senior member on the Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fight for funding that empowers those entering our labor market and strengthens our economy. I’d like to thank all those involved at TWC for their commitment to enhancing the Lone Star state’s economic prosperity through a strong workforce, as well as fostering a competitive environment which attracts a variety of new employers each year.”

Through a two-tiered funding system that provides states with maximum flexibility in supporting the programs’ goals, while addressing needs and enhancing employer engagement, performance and positive outcomes, Texas received funding in both Tier I and Tier II streams.

Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) is a proven model of apprenticeship that has been validated by the U.S. Department of Labor or a State Apprenticeship Agency.

RAPs enable and energize more employers to participate and provide them access to larger talent pools that have been trained for entry-level to management positions, thereby meeting industry demands and reducing unemployment rates across the country.
