TAMIU and Laredo College will see an additional $1.23 million as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act for being minority-serving institutions.

According to Rep. Henry Cuellar, the money will be split between both institutes.

“This public health and economic crisis has upended the lives of students across our community,” Cuellar said. “This federal investment will be used to provide relief to students and help institutions of higher education mitigate the impact of COVID-19. As a senior appropriator, I am committed to ensuring our colleges and universities nor our students find themselves a casualty of this pandemic.”

LC will receive a total of $562,640 and TAMIU $667,576. The additional funds for TAMIU are a result of the school promoting post-baccalaureate opportunities for Hispanic Americans (PPOHA).

“This funding comes to our institution at a critical time in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Laredo College VP of Student Success and Enrollment Dr. Fred Solis said. “The additional funds will go a long way toward assisting our students and institution to continue in our recovery.”

According to LC, the funding may be used as direct aid for students and to help with the college’s expenses.

“Laredo College is a learner-centered institution that puts the needs of our students at the forefront of all of our decisions,” Laredo College President Dr. Ricardo Solis said. “The additional CARES act funding we receive will help and provide some financial relief to all in the Laredo College family.”

At TAMIU, the funding will be used for institutional expenses that include lost revenue, reimbursement for expenses, the cost in transitioning to online education, training for staff members and payroll. According to TAMIU President Dr. Pablo Arenaz, the partnership will help support the Developing Hispanic-serving Institution program and continue to enhance or expand TAMIU’s academic offerings, program quality and stability.

“As an institution of higher education helping majority Hispanic students, TAMIU can additionally support the parallel PPOHA grant’s goals of expanded Hispanic post-baccalaureate educational opportunities and attainment, and enhanced program quality,” Arenaz said. “This combination strongly advances our shared goal of helping large numbers of Hispanic and low-income students’ complete postsecondary degrees.”
