The San Antonio office of StandardAero was awarded a $237.39 million Air Force contract to provide maintenance, repair and overhaul the J85 engine, which powers the T-38 trainer jet, according to a May 5 news release from U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar. The Air Education and Training Command at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph is the primary user of the T-38 for joint specialized undergraduate pilot training, while other users in the U.S. include Air Combat Command at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia, Air Force Materiel Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. “It is critical that we repair our military equipment and technology in order to increase readiness and mission capability,” Cuellar said in the statement. Cuellar is a senior member of the defense subcommittee on appropriations, which secured $42.7 billion for the Air Force’s operation and maintenance budget, part of which is funding the StandardAero contract. The contract has an expected completion date of May 2028.
