San Antonio, TX—Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announced $423,975 in federal funds for San Antonio’s Senior Corps, a national service program for Americans 55 years and older. Specifically, the Alamo Area Council of Governments secured $302,423 and Catholic Charities Diocese San Antonio secured $121,552 in federal funds from the Corporation for National and Community Service.
“Senior Corps does incredible work in engaging older Americans in service projects that address community needs,” said Congressman Cuellar. “These funds will be used to support Senior Corps volunteers who are working hard to improve the well-being of our neighbors and families. As a senior Appropriator, I am committed to funding programs that help seniors so they can continue to be integral members of our community as well as maintain their independence. I want to thank the staff of the Alamo Area Council of Governments and the Catholic Charities Diocese San Antonio for their tireless work in serving people in need throughout the San Antonio area. ”
Catholic Charities Diocese San Antonio received $121,552, awarded through the Senior Corps RSVP Funded Grant, to support 300 volunteers. The RSVP Program engages volunteers to use their skills and experience to tackle a diverse range of activities, such as tutoring, job readiness training, and tax preparation.
The Alamo Area Council of Governments received $302,423, awarded through the Senior Corps Senior Companion Program Funded Grant, to support 47 volunteers. Volunteers in the Senior Companion Program provide companionship and assistance with daily tasks such as shopping or paying bills to help other seniors maintain independence.
Senior Corps addresses some of our community’s most pressing challenges by engaging more than 220,000 Americans 55 and older. Some volunteer programs include academic tutoring and mentoring, elderly care, and disaster relief support. While volunteering, seniors also improve their own lives, by staying active and healthy through service. Senior Corps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that engages millions of Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service each year through its Senior Corps and AmeriCorps programs and leads volunteer and civic engagement initiatives for the nation.
