Laredo, TX—Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announced $14,011,858 in federal funds for housing initiatives in San Antonio and Bexar County. These funds, awarded through the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s three grant programs, will support access to safe and affordable housing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Many people in our community are struggling to keep up with the cost of housing during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Congressman Cuellar. “This funding will help improve housing opportunities and assist with homelessness prevention in our community. As a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, I will continue to ensure that America’s most vulnerable receive the funding and support they need during this crisis. I want to thank Mayor Ron Nirenberg, County Judge Nelson Wolff, the Commissioners Court, City Council members, and the rest of their staff for their dedication to combat homelessness and providing residents with the opportunities to live a successful life. I would also like to thank the San Antonio Congressional Delegation for their work in helping secure these funds.”
As a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, Congressman Cuellar helped secure $5 billion for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, $4 billion for the Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) program, and $65 million for the Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS (HOPWA) program in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The funding will be awarded as below.
The CDBG program helps support home ownership, housing rehabilitation, public improvements, and economic development projects in communities throughout the country.
The ESG program provides street outreach, emergency shelter, rapid re-housing, homelessness prevention, and related services to persons experiencing homelessness or in danger of becoming homeless throughout the state.
HOPWA provides housing assistance and related supportive services for low-income persons medically diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and their families. HOPWA assistance also includes mental health treatment, nutritional services, job training and placement assistance, and assistance with daily living.
