Sheriff Cuellar, District Attorney Alaniz, and Rep. Cuellar Announce $150,000 in Federal Funds for Webb County’s Sheriff Office and District Attorney’s Office

Funding will go towards buying 33 radios, improving communication between local law enforcement

Laredo, TX— Sheriff Martin Cuellar, District Attorney Isidro Alaniz, and Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) today announced $150,000 in federal funds for Webb County’s Sheriff Office as well as the District Attorney’s Office. These funds, awarded through the DOJ’s Bureau of Justice Assistance Gulf States Regional Law Enforcement Technology Training and Technical Assistance Initiative, will assist with information and intelligence sharing between local law enforcement. 

“It is critical that our law enforcement has cutting-edge technology to keep our community safe,” said Congressman Cuellar. “These funds will be used to purchase new radios, which will expand our law enforcement information sharing system and improve our ability to detect, prevent, and respond.  As a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, I will continue to ensure law enforcement has the necessary funding so they can effectively and efficiently do their jobs. I want to thank Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar, District Attorney Isidro Alaniz and the rest of our local law enforcement for their tireless work in protecting our community.”

Sheriff Martin Cuellar said, “We are very grateful here at the Sheriff’s Office to Congressman Henry Cuellar for always keeping our community’s needs in mind,” said Sheriff Martin Cuellar. “These funds will be put to great use as they will help us purchase 22 hand-held portable radios and equip our deputies with the latest technology and devices.”

District Attorney Isidro Alaniz said, “We are very appreciative of the Congressman’s efforts to secure these funds. These radios are another tool for our daily communication with law enforcement and enable us to keep our community safe.”

Gulf States Regional Law Enforcement Technology Training and Technical Assistance

This year, as a senior member of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, Congressman Cuellar helped secure $3 million for the Regional Law Enforcement Technology Initiative, which funds this program.

The program provides the five Gulf States (Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas) with the technology and resources needed to fight crime and drug trafficking in their local areas. Specifically, with these funds, the Sheriff ‘s office will purchase 22 radios and the District Attorney’s office will buy 11 radios.
