RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas (CBS 4) — President Donald Trump will deliver his annual State of the Union address Tuesday on Capitol Hill and one local teenager will be front and center to see history for himself. It's the chance of a lifetime for 18-year-old Alex Rodriguez, a senior at Rio Grande City High School, who was selected by U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar as his guest for the 2020 State of the Union Address. "I'm so honored and thankful and I just want to gather as much information I can and give it back to my community and I want them to know if I could do it, you can do it too," said Alex Rodriguez who has been a part of the Border Patrol Explorers Program for over three years. It's his commitment and dedication to clean up his streets that made the choice so easy for Congressman Cuellar. "I get one ticket every year and he has my assigned seat," said Cuellar. "So he'll be there watching history unfold, he's going to see Congress members, Senators, cabinet members, Supreme Court Judges. It's a very historic moment so I'm so excited we picked someone from Rio Grande City and from Starr County." Rodriguez plans to stay in the Rio Grande Valley for college and pursue a degree in Criminal Law, eventually becoming a Border Patrol Agent. "My reason is to serve and protect ever since I was a little boy, I've always stood up for people who are afraid, I was put here in this world to protect and serve," said Rodriguez. But his biggest goal is to give back to Starr County and everyone in it. "I want to bring them up so people can say, 'yes, I know where Rio Grande City is,' 'yes, that kid is from Rio Grande City,' and I just want to bring up my hometown where I grew up," said Rodriguez. On Tuesday, Alex will go to The White House for a private tour before attending the State of The Union in the evening. |
