Rep. Cuellar Statement on the Supreme Court’s Decision on U.S. Census

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) released the following statement after the Supreme Court handed down an opinion in Department of Commerce v. New York, which deals with the constitutionality of a citizen question on the 2020 U.S. Census:

“I applaud the Supreme Court’s decision today to prohibit inclusion of the citizenship question in the 2020 U.S. Census, which will only suppress participation,” said Congressman Cuellar. “An accurate Census is critical to the proper functioning of our representational democracy, such data directly effects the allocation of more than $800 billion in federal funding every year. It is imperative that all communities are counted accurately and fully in order to provide resources such as health care, housing, and education to all individuals and families living in the United States. I will continue to ensure maximum participation and inclusion in the 2020 Census while continuing to ensure that this process remains immune to political bias.”
