KGNS: Supreme Court rules independent commissions can draw district lines

The Supreme Courthttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png has ruled that independent commissions can draw district lines for their states.

The decision was close with a five to four ruling.

As a resulthttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png of the decision, congressional districts can be decided by independent commissions not only by lawmakers.

Some votershttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png had claimed the districts had been drawn by lawmakers to favor their parties.

Congressman Henry Cuellar says Texas won't need to change their process of redistricting.

"Basically, what the Supreme Court says, depending on what the statehttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png wants to do, either the state legislature can draw the lines like they do here in Texas, or they can go like Arizona or California where independent commissions can draw the lines", said Cuellar.

Cuellar points out that there are other lawsuits in texas that could affect redistricting in the future.
