KRGV: Black Hawks Arriving Friday to Laredo

Response to last Friday’s incident with CBP helicopter

LAREDO -

Two Black Hawk helicopters are set to arrive in Laredo on Friday, announced U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar.

The new helicopters will cover the entire border region from Laredo to Brownsville.

This announcement is following last Friday’s incident.

Shots were fired from the Mexico side of the border and hit a U.S. Customs and Border Protection helicopter. It forced the pilots to make an emergency landing.

Cuellar said one of the bullets hit a pilot’s desk.

The Black Hawks have a thicker exterior that will protect the people inside, in case of another shooting.

“(The) thicker skin, amour will stop the type of bullets that were used last week on other CBP helicopters that went through the skin itself and could have killed somebody,” Cuellar said.

The congressman said the Black Hawks won’t be equipped with machine guns or any other weapons typically associated with the aircraft.

The pilots will be armed the same they are in the current helicopters.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS is waiting on answers from CBP as to where these helicopters are coming from and how much it costs to bring them. We will continue to bring you the latest.
