KGNS: Cuellar receives award from Texas Medical Community

WASHINGTON, DC (Office of Henry Cuellar) , June 2, 2015

Congressman Henry Cuellar received the Soaring Eagle Award from Texas Alliance For Patient Access, Texas Medical Liability Trust and Texas Medical Association for his work to fix the broken Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) system.

Cuellar played a pivotal role in getting and keeping standard of care language in HR 2, commonly referred to as the ‘Doc Fix’. Cuellar’s successful addition marks the first time Congress has ever passed legislation that provides medical liability protections for physicians.

“After lots of hard work, it was a great moment in April when we were able to celebrate the inclusion of the standard of care language in the SGR legislation,” Congressman Cuellar said. “The enactment of this legislation permanently fixes the flawed sustainable growth program, ensures state medical malpractice liability laws are not adversely impacted by the federal government, and properly funds community health centers –all wins for Texas patients and doctors. Thank you to Texas Alliance For Patient Access, Texas Medical Liability Trust and Texas Medical Association for this award. I look forward to seeing the positive impact our work has in Texas and around the country.”

“It is inspiring to know that one man who sees a problem, and who has the determination to do something about it, can pass legislation in the United States Congress. Your language in HR 2 does so much good for so many, and for that we are immensely grateful,” said Jon Opelt, Executive Director of Texas Alliance For Patient Access.
