LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) - Local college campuses receive $3.4 million in Grants

Local campuses are getting money that will go towards their science, math and general education programs.

Both L.C.C. and TAMIU received grants in total of $3.4 million dollars Thursday. The money is intended to help Hispanic students.

Congressman Cuellar's office says one of the grants will help the institutions keep up preparation, retention and graduation success efforts.

94 percent of TAMIU undergrads and 96 percent of L.C.C. grads are Hispanic, and supporting minority students is part of the reason for the award.

Congressman Henry Cuellar says, "This is going to be a very helpful effort to make sure that our Hispanic students not only enter or get admitted to college or university, but they actually graduate."

About a quarter of the money is being set aside to well help TAMIU'S efforts to promote minorities in science.
The two grants are through the U.S. Department of Education.
