LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) - The Senate is back next month to discuss improvements on the bill that would allow unaccompanied children who cross into the US illegally a chance to stay in the country. Congressman Henry Cuellar spoke to members of Kiwanis on the status of the Humane Act and the flow of immigrants into the country. The congressman says in July, the Valley reported over 18,000 detained compared to the 28,000 seen between the months of May and June. "We go back September," said Cuellar. "The main issue we will be looking into is making sure the government doesn't shutdown. Probably add some resources there and might look at some language that the Humane Act needs to be added there at that time." Although the number of immigrants crossing the border still remains high, Cuellar says 20 percent of those immigrants are unaccompanied children.
