Rep. Cuellar Announces that Laredo Airport Awarded $3 Million Federal Grant for Security Upgrades

Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-TX28) announced today that the Laredo International Airport has received a $3 million investment from the Federal Aviation Administration for security upgrades at the airport. The airport received the funds through a competitive application process. This security project is coordinated with the efforts of the Transportation Security Administration. “I am very pleased to announce these vital funds to upgrade the security infrastructure at the Laredo International Airport,” said Congressman Cuellar. “These funds will enable the City to initiate more security related projects that will ensure the Airport remains a top notch facility. I want to recognize the Laredo Mayor Raul Salinas, City Manager Carlos Villarreal, and Laredo International Airport Manager Jose Flores for their commitment to securing this grant and thank the Federal Aviation Administration for its decision to invest in Laredo.” “This grant is going to allow the Laredo International Airport to enhance its security capacities to better serve our growing number of passengers and air cargo service,” said City of Laredo City Manager Carlos Villarreal. “While we already meet all FAA standards of security, the grant will only augment our position as a leading airport for travel and trade in lower South Texas.” The grant funds will allow the Laredo International Airport to: · Replace 8,600 feet of fence with 8’ and 10’ chain link fence with 3 strands of barbed wire and with concrete footer; · Replace ten (10) vehicular gates with sliding cantilever gates and access controls; · Install access controls on two (3) pedestrian gates; · Upgrade badging system; · Install new dispatch monitory station; and, · Acquire Sweeper.
