Honored for service LISA LUNA STAFF WRITER Outgoing Councilmember Kathy Coronado was honored for serving in District 3. She served as City Secretary for 20 years and then as City Manager for eight years, before serving with the City Council. Plaques of appreciation were presented to longtime, outgoing Pleasanton City Councilmembers Kathy Coronado and Jimmy Magel, by Mayor Powell, at the May 15 Pleasanton council meeting. Magel served with District 1 from May of 1996 to May of 2014. “”I really appreciate this. I really appreciate the opportunity to work with all the citizens of Pleasanton, the council, the mayor and especially our new city manager. You really don’t realize until you are sitting on the council, how many people’s lives that you can impact as a council person, hundreds of people in this city. We provide water, sewer, fire protection, police protection, the fire department— a number of things that we do in the city and they are all coming and directed through the city council. It is a really big impact. Thank you again,” said Magel. Pleasanton City Councilman Jimmy Magel, at right, receives a plaque from Mayor Clinton J. Powell for his 18 years of service with District 1. Back in April, Magel was honored by Congressman Henry Cuellar on his retirement. He stated, “His tireless efforts have improved the community, and he has served to better the development and progress of Pleasanton.” Magel was born in Kenedy, but his family moved to Pleasantonshortly after his birth. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout, graduated from Pleasanton High School in 1966 and then earned a degree in Pharmacy in 1971 from UT-Austin. After working at Henry’s Pharmacy, he began working at Rexco, which he now owns. He is married to Bernice Magel and is quite active in the Pleasanton Ex-Students Association and is a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Jourdanton. Mayor Powell then presented Coronado’s plaque, for her service from May of 2012 to May of 2014. She served with the city for a total of a little over 30 years. A native of Houston, Coronado graduated from the University of Houston and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing. She served as Pleasanton City Secretary for 20 years and then held an eightyear term serving as Pleasanton City Manager. Her husband is Jim Coronado and she is active as a parishioner at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Pleasanton. “I enjoyed being with the city and I tried my best serving the public, which is the main priority for anyone who is elected,” said Coronado. She added that if the city felt she would be useful serving on a board or committee, she would be interested. However, she does not think she will consider running for office again. Both Coronado and Magel received resounding applause from the audience and Mayor Powell. |
