Congressman Henry Cuellar attended and addressed the citizens and those who helped to make the new buildings a reality. “We are here today to celebrate the grand opening of the Pleasanton Civic Center and library and congratulate the community for this milestone in civic life,” said Congressman Cuellar.

“The Civic Center and library represent the uniqueness of the Pleasanton community and amazing growth that the community has undergone. I wish the Pleasanton community many years of happy gatherings and successful events here.”

Dr. Cuellar presented a flag flown over the United States Capitol to the City of Pleasanton at the opening of the new Civic Center.

Mayor Clint Powell acknowledged the different groups who had been involved in the whole process including the Pleasanton Community Center, Inc. (PCCI).

“After debates and some disagreements – everybody pulled together - the council, the city, the citizens, the different groups – and we’ve got this wonderful multifunction building today,” said Mayor Clint Powell.

He then presented special awards to the groups which worked hard on fundraising and keeping the idea alive. Honored were RCW Energy Services for their donation of $10,000 for computers for the library; Pleasanton Public Library Foundation; the Friends of the Library; to the Toby Hill family for the donation of the red sandstone rock used for the Freedom Center, to Patsy Troell for putting the needs of Pleasanton first, and to Dorothy Haverlah for her dedication to the City of Pleasanton.

Beautiful mesquite wood furniture adorns the foyer which was crafted by Brian Anderson and donated by the Pleasanton Woman’s Club.

Donated artwork will also have a home in the new center. Two prints from original paintings of Lee Ricks’ old Atascosa County Jail building and LaMerle Koehl’s Atascosa County Courthouse building, were donated by the Seay and Repka families. Another original painting of the Ursel home by Amanda Furr was donated by the Pleasanton Moving Forward Group.

After formal ribbon cuttings for all three areas of the complex, guests enjoyed the live music played by Brian Anderson, Adam and Toby Hill as well as refreshments supplied by the Friends of the Library, Lew’s Patio and Grill, Kadobe’s, Plaza Tapatio and Yummy Buffet.
