U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar and federal officials announced Tuesday a multi-million dollar improvement plan for two of Laredo’s busiest international bridges.

Cuellar was joined by Dan Tangherlini, administrator for the General Services Administration, and Alejandro Mayorkas, deputy secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, at International Bridge II to highlight the $62 million in funding that will go toward the updates.

International Bridge I, which is more than five decades old, is expected to undergo a complete renovation of its administration building as well as interior upgrades to improve traffic flow. The improvements to International Bridge II will include the construction of new bus stalls, vehicle inspection lanes, a new waiting area, restrooms and a canopy for buses.

GSA is expected to award construction contract by August and construction is scheduled to be completed by July 2017.
