Improvements announced for Laredo Port of Entry

LAREDO, Texas (AP) - A South Texas border crossing will be getting a nearly $62 million upgrade.

Federal and local officials on Tuesday announced plans to overhaul the Laredo Port of Entry that links Texas and Mexico.

Congress has allocated funds for expansion and modernization of two of the four ports of entry at Laredo. The projects will include an overhaul of Laredo Bridge 1, to improve pedestrian flow, plus construction of a new automobilehttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png and bus inspection facility at Laredo Bridge 2.

Contracts should be awarded by this summer. Construction should be finished by mid-2017.

Congressman Henry Cuellar says the improvementshttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png should mean pedestrians will no longer have to wait in long lines in the heat. He says the upgrades will also increase safety and allow for better flow of trade and commerce.
