Dept. Homeland Security Sec. Visits Rio Grande Valley

Congressmen Henry Cuellar and Ruben Hinojosa accompanied Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson in a tour of the South Texas border with the purpose of identifying regional needs and explore potential resources.

During two different press conferences held at the Anzalduas International Bridge in McAllen, local officials and representatives announced plans to improve national and border security as well as trade and commerce, recognizing that the valley plays a key role.

Cuellar also announced an addition of 2 thousand more Customs and Border Protection Agents over the next 2 years to revamp border crossings and inspections.

This, after convincing congress to invest in our neighbor south of the border.

After touring the Rio Grande, a Port Isabel detention center and meeting with local mayors and chiefs of police, the secretary of DHS revealed that there would be greater emphasis on South Texas.
With the continued growth in population and trade along our border, it is expected that Washington will be paying closer attention to the valley for the coming years.
