Young Laredoan Present at State of the Union Address

LAREDO, TX – Fifth grader, Luis Castañeda, was present during the State of the Union address given by U.S. President, Barack Obama.

He won the opportunity to visit Washington, DC, after his letter was selected after explaining that the visit would be the best moment for him and his mother Sylvia. Castañeda wrote that this event would change his life forever and help him towards his future goal of attending Yale University.

Each congressman has the right to take an individual as a guest. Congressmen Henry Cuellar organized a competition among students of Laredo. Castañeda’s essay entitled, “Going to Washington D.C. with Dr. Henry Cuellar will be the highlight of my life” won the competition.

“It’s the best thing that has ever happened to me. It’s a thrill to be present,” he said.
