Yesterday, Congressman Henry Cuellar and other members of the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Coalition met with President Obama at the White House to discuss the need for long-term fiscal reform, including balancing the budget and bringing much-needed accountability to the federal government. Blue Dogs have been longstanding advocates of responsible fiscal policy and have committed to working with the President and leaders in Congress to take meaningful steps to put the country back on a path to fiscal and economic sustainability. “Our conversation focused on reining in America’s trillions of dollars in deficit spending, and we spoke at length about cutting waste, fraud, and abuse in the federal budget,” said Congressman Henry Cuellar. “As Congress works in the short term to help our economy recover, we can’t afford to lose sight of our long-term economic needs. Deficit spending is crippling our economy and damaging our national security, and it is simply unsustainable. I appreciate the President’s willingness to build a partnership with the Blue Dogs to bring our nation’s budget under control, and I look forward to continuing to work with him in the years ahead.” The following are quotes from other members of the Blue Dog Coalition, released immediately after yesterday’s meeting:
The fiscally conservative Blue Dog Coalition was formed in 1995 with the goal of representing the center of the House of Representatives and appealing to the mainstream values of the American public. The Blue Dogs are dedicated to a core set of beliefs that transcend partisan politics, including a deep commitment to the financial stability and national security of the United States.
