Congressional Report
Dear Friends,

I would like to share with you several updates during my work week in Washington, D.C.

Impact of Government Shutdown - District 28

As of this Monday, due to the refusal of the House Republican Leadership to pass a clean Continuing Resolution that provides the basic service of funding the government,  federal agencies are closed for business.

In result, the government shutdown has placed an estimated 40,000 federal employees at risk of being furloughed throughout district 28.

I have fought against this shutdown and called for a clean Continuing Resolution to continue government operations by signing on as a co-sponsor to H.R. 3223, a bill that would make sure all federal employees affected by the shutdown receive any pay they missed while out on furlough.

This week, I called Timothy Haight, a veteran of the Iraq War, employee at Fort Sam Houston, and resident of La Vernia, Texas. Mr. Haight and his wife rely on federal paychecks and are both currently on furlough. Part of Tim’s letter to me said,

“As a community, we’ve never asked for exorbitant salaries, fancy perks and junkets – we’ve relied on the time tested principle that our federal jobs are safe and provide a stable income…Please, don’t let the House Republican Leadership and the tea party shut down our government at federal workers (not to mention the many American citizens who rely upon our services) expense.”

Tim, I will continue fighting for you and your wife with all of my colleagues here in DC until we reopen our government and restore pay to our federal workers.

If you or your family has been affected by the shutdown, I want to hear from you.  Please write in to me here or call any one of my offices:

Outreach Events throughout District 28

"National Night Out Against Crime" Event

Earlier this week, my Outreach Coordinators attended the "National Night Out Against Crime" event throughout District 28 (Laredo, Rio Grande City, Live Oak, Universal City, Windcrest, and San Antonio).

National Night Out has taken place for 30 years and now involves over 37 million people from among 15,000 communities.

Law enforcement officials and civilian leaders invite members of the community to unite annually at this event to keep crime watch volunteers informed, interested, involved and motivated.

As a family man and father of two girls, I worry about the safety of our neighborhoods. National Night Out is an important opportunity for neighbors to join together and send the message that we will not tolerate crime in our communities.

Cuarto Vientos Interchange - Laredo, Texas

On Wednesday, my Outreach Coordinator, Jorge Garcia, attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Cuarto Vientos Interchange in Laredo, Texas.

The ceremony was hosted by the Texas Department of Transportation.

Recently, Outreach Coordinator, Pete Arguello, attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the first IDEA South Flores Campus in San Antonio, Texas.

IDEA public schools is a growing network of tuition-free K-12 public charter schools serving more than 13,000 students in 28 schools throughout the Rio Grande Valley, Austin, and San Antonio.
