Congressional Report

Dear Friends,

Early this week, Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Secretary Chad Wolf announced that DHS will extend the limitation of non-essential travel at land ports of entry on the U.S.-Mexico border through November 21st.

Though I would have preferred that DHS partially ease the restrictions on non-essential travel on October 21st, I am grateful to see that for the first time, “DHS is now working closely with Mexico and Canada to identify safe criteria to ease the restrictions in the future and support our border communities.” I am hopeful that DHS will continue to engage with us so we can develop a community-backed strategy that focuses on our shared interest in protecting the health of the individual and the health of the border economy.

Throughout the week, I traveled to various parts of the District. I held a press conference discussing the partial reopening of the border, a grant announcement totaling more than $2.3 million in federal funds for Floresville, and an open discussion over the proposed construction site for the ineffective border wall in San Ygnacio. Councilwoman Marissa Ximenez and I visited small businesses throughout downtown Floresville and had great conversations with local public works employees.

My staff in the District continues to attend various events throughout our nine counties.

As always, if you need help with a federal agency, please contact one of my offices:

Stay safe. Stay strong. And please don't forget to wear a mask.

Rep. Cuellar Visits San Ygnacio Historical Site

This past weekend, I visited the historic District of San Ygnacio, TX. While I was there, I met with residents who lived on the border and listened to their concerns regarding the potential construction of the proposed border wall site. During our discussions, I talked about the language I wrote to protect historic districts like San Ygnacio from the threat of construction of this ineffective border wall.

On this week’s intern spotlight, meet Mauricio Madrazo. He is currently going to United High School and interning in the Laredo office. Mauricio is helping with outreach for the Congressional App Challenge and attending food banks with the Laredo staff. Mauricio applied for this internship to gain knowledge about the legislative branch. After his internship, Mauricio plans on pursuing a double major in Political Science and a language degree in either Mandarin or Russian. He likes to cook, play the cello, and chess in his free time.
