Congressional Report
Dear Friends,

I would like to share with you several updates during my work week in Washington, D.C.

Government Shutdown - Update

We are 12 days into the ongoing government shutdown and the continuing resolution debate is still underway.

Recently, I along with 200 other Democrats signed a letter to Speaker John Boehner emphasizing that there are enough Democrats to pass a bill to reopen the government. In result, enough House Republicans have come out in support of the 'clean' continuing resolution bill that it could pass the House immediately with bipartisan support.

This government shutdown is not only hurting our economy, but the creation of American jobs as well. Americans need a functioning government they can rely on. The federal workforce should not have to suffer the consequences of the House and Senate's inability to govern.

If you or your family has been affected by the shutdown, I want to hear from you.  Please write in to me here or call any one of my offices:

A Unified Effort to End the Government Shutdown

I joined 52 of my colleagues in an effort to call for an end to the government shutdown and advocate for both sides to work together and reach a consensus.

This is the time for Members of Congress to fulfill our legislative responsibilities - sit down with our colleagues, use common sense and find a compromise that that benefits the country.

As representatives of the American people, we came to Washington to reach consensus and make life better for the majority of Americans - not halt the government and put global markets in crisis because we disagree.

This is the time to "Stop Fighting and Start Fixing" and address the prominent fiscal issues to fulfill our financial obligations and maintain a stable global economy.

CHLI Trade and International Affairs Symposium - Washington, D.C.

On Wednesday, I spoke at the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute's (CHLI) Trade and International Affairs Symposium on Global Leadership in Washington, D.C.

As a Congressman representing the largest inland port in the country, I stress the importance of trade to our local and national economies and international relations.

The ongoing shutdown has hurt this crucial sector of our economy by halting ongoing discussions over trade partnerships.
