Dear Friends,
|
Last week, I traveled across the district for the Veterans Day district work period, attending and speaking at events in San Antonio and Laredo.
On Monday, I hosted a rail blockage meeting in Laredo to discuss the issue of railway traffic in Laredo. Afterward, I attended a meeting and signed a memorandum of understanding between the City of Laredo and COMCE, a Mexican trade organization.
On Tuesday, I was honored to speak at the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce about business concerns and to receive an award.
On Wednesday, I attended the Laredo chapter of the American Legion's Veterans Day celebration and spoke on the importance of our veterans' contribution to society.
Finally, on Thursday, I attended the grand opening of the first-ever Mexican Customs facility on U.S. soil. Located at the Laredo International Airport, the facility will allow cargo bound for Mexico to be pre-cleared before reaching the border.
Please read on for additional information about these events and others from across the district. |
Discussing Rail Blockage in Laredo
On Monday, Congressman Cuellar hosted a rail blockage meeting with officials from the U.S. and Mexico in hopes of finding solutions to railway traffic congestion in Laredo.
|
On Monday, I attended and hosted a meeting in Laredo with officials from Mexico and the U.S. to discuss the issue of rail blockage in Laredo. These railway traffic backups have resulted from the amount of rail commerce that passes through our region. With Laredo the busiest port in the country, we need to find ways to unclog our railways to keep the economy moving.

Speaking to the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce |
On Tuesday, I attended one of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce's congressional series luncheons to give a legislative update on trade- and commerce-related topics. |
|
I had a wonderful time speaking to the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce last Tuesday. I was invited to speak as part of the organization's Congressional Luncheon Series, and I was privileged enough to address jobs, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the business climate in San Antonio, the Export-Import Bank and more. |
Honoring our Veterans |
On Veterans Day I honored the men and women in my district who have served in the armed forces to help keep our region safe. |
|
On Veterans Day, I had breakfast with veterans in Laredo and spoke at San Agustin Plaza downtown about the selfless work done by our armed forces to keep us safe. I have always deeply appreciated the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform, and I was honored to give thanks to those who have given so much of themselves to this country. |
Honoring our Military Service Dogs |
|
On Wednesday, my outreach coordinator for Bexar County, Pete Arguello, attended the Veterans Day Celebration at Northeast Lakeview College in Universal City. Pictured above are Lisa Phillips, CEO & Founder of Gizmo's Gift - a nonprofit that works to educate the public about the benefits of our Armed Forces military working dogs; Gizmo's Gift's official mascot, Sgt. Rambo (2015 Military Dog of the Year); and Pete Arguello.

Inauguration of Pre-Clearance Facility in Mexico |
On Thursday, Congressman Cuellar attended the grand opening of Mexican Customs' first facility at a U.S. Airport. By pre-clearing cargo bound for Mexico, we can expedite the flow of commerce through our region.

On Thursday, I attended the inauguration of the new pre-clearance facility at the Laredo International Airport. The first of its kind at a U.S. airport, the Mexican Customs facility will allow cargo bound for Mexico to be cleared on the U.S. side of the border before reaching the border. This could expedite the processing of cargo headed for Mexico. |
Discussing Veterans Issues in the Valley |
|
Last week, my Southern District Outreach Coordinator, Nichole Hernandez, met with City of Penitas Mayor Rodrigo Lopez, State Rep. Oscar Longoria and local veterans at the Penitas Veterans Day Ceremony to discuss how our office can assist with Veterans Affairs and other veterans issues. Pictured are veterans from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3895 of La Joya and the La Joya High School JROTC.
