Congressional Update

Dear friends,

I would like to share with you several updates during this week of session in Washington, D.C.

Courthouse Conveyance Ceremony – Laredo, TX

Last week, I was honored to take part in a monumental moment for the City of Laredo.

The transfer of this federal government building to the City of the Laredo has been a collaborative effort over the last few years and is an example of successful partnerships between government entities.

This acquisition marks a new chapter of service for the City of Laredo and its people. The building will be used to house city offices, congressional representation, and city council meetings, but will also continue to serve as a central service location for the U.S. Postal Service.

“Summer of Success” Series Seminar

Later that day, I attended the commencement of the “Summer of Success” series seminar at Texas A&M International University, in which I addressed several local small business owners interested in contracting services to local, state, and federal entities. These seminars will provide hands-on-training, business certifications, and lessons on how to properly manage contract awards.

These seminars are FREE to the public, but space is limited.

For more information on future seminars, please contact Juan Sanchez at:

Poteet Volunteer Fire Department

On Monday, I along with Mayor Larry Cantu and Fire Chief Curtis Adams, presented $195,000 in grant funds to the Poteet Volunteer Fire Department.

These funds will be used to replace their current 32-year-old tanker, which will put them in compliance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and will allow them to perform their duties properly and efficiently.

This grant was made available through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG) of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

To the selfless men and women of Poteet’s Volunteer Fire Department whom have demonstrated their dedication to protect and serve their community, thank you and congratulations!

2013 Congressional Art Competition Winner Announced

I am pleased to announce that this year's Congressional Art Competition winner is Venancia Armijo from East Central High School in San Antonio, TX.

Venancia, a high school sophomore, will have her charcoal drawing entitled, "Reading," on display in our nation's capitol for a year.

An awards ceremony was held in D.C. on Wednesday, June 26th, honoring her and fellow recipients from various districts. It was a pleasure meeting Venancia and I hope that her first trip to Washington D.C. was a memorable one.
